In celebration of what would have been Jerry Garcia’s 80th birthday, DGN Custom Guitars, Fandiem and Bandsintown have come together to honor the legacy and life of the San Francisco luminary with a fundraising campaign benefitting the Jerry Garcia Foundation.
Over the pandemic, Chris Shand had the idea to commission a one-of-a-kind replica guitar of Garcia’s iconic instrument, “Wolf,” featuring the musician’s original artwork and raffle it off to raise money for the Jerry Garcia Foundation– A 501(c)(3) nonprofit that supports environmental, artistic and humanitarian causes through music and art.
Shand contacted the owner of DGN Custom Guitars, Dan Neafsey, who, along with Garcia’s daughter, Keelin, and wife, Manasha, set out to produce the unique plastic-free reproduction, which includes Garcia’s ink and pen drawing of “Dog.”
“Wolf is my personal favorite of all Jerry’s guitars,” said Neafsey. “When Chris Shand reached out about this project, it was a no brainer for me. I was so excited to do what I do best and building a guitar like this with no plastic was a super fun challenge. I had to get creative with many of the methods and materials I normally use when building custom guitars, all while staying true to Doug Irwins’ masterpiece. I think the final result speaks for itself,” he concluded.
Garcia’s original “Wolf” guitar was sold at auction in 2017 for $1.9 million. The sale of the instrument benefited the Southern Poverty Law Center, a catalyst for racial justice and human rights.
The DGN guitar will be unveiled for the first time publicly at Jerry Garcia’s 80th Birthday Celebration on Aug. 4, at Garcia’s at The Capitol Theatre in Port Chester, N.Y. In addition, the instrument will also be played by Mihali during his set at the celebratory event. The concert also honors the opening of the Jerry Garcia Archive.
For $10, participants can “Donate To Win” the custom artifact, which includes the DGN Custom “Dog” guitar, complimenting plastic-free case featuring Garcia’s original artwork and a DGN 427 custom tube amplifier with a tie-dye speaker cloth cover.
